Little Hare Finds a Gift
by Oleksandr Shatokhin
Age Range: Under_5
Little Hare is all snug in her bed while outside everything is enveloped in a blanket of snow. Awakened by a sudden loud noise Little Hare rushes outside to investigate. There on the roof of her burrow is an enormous box tied in a red ribbon. Who can this present be for? Little Hare has no idea but is determined to discover who is the rightful owner. She loads the gift onto her sledge and sets out to check with all her neighbour forest animals. Along the way, Little Hare gets an even bigger surprise when she bumps into Santa Claus himself. As a result of a terrible snowstorm, Santa has lost all the presents he was about to deliver. Little Hare is only too happy to help him search the forest and retrieve the packages.
Ukrainian author and illustrator Oleksandr Shatokhin’s lovely, gentle tale, translated by Ali Kinsella, about a kind-hearted Hare, who can only think of others, is an ideal picture book for the festive season. At the end of Little Hare’s adventure, she receives a very special Christmas surprise of her own.
Shatokhin’s artwork is striking. The contrasting perspectives of the diminutive protagonist with very long ears and the larger-than-life Santa Claus are especially engaging. The images are full of warmth, colour and vitality. With minimal text, it is the humour which permeates the pages.
A gorgeous heart-warming tale full of true Christmas spirit.
Oleksandr Shatokhin lives and works in Sumy, Ukraine. His two previous titles Yellow Butterfly (2023) and The Happiest Lion Cub (2022) are both reviewed on the Outside In World website.
