Treasure Thief (The)
by Béatrice Rodriguez
Age Range: 6-8
This is the second wordless picture book by French Illustrator Béatrice Rodriguez featuring characters from the acclaimed ‘The Chicken Thief’ – Rooster, Hare and Bear. The start of this book sees the three friends bidding adieu to Fox and Chicken and setting off on their sea voyage back home to the farm. As usual, of course, things don’t go according to plan. En route they encounter a storm and are washed up on a desert island where rooster discovers a mysterious while orb. He becomes very possessive about his new-found object and oblivious to his friends deciding that he is going to take it home. His two companions follow him and along the way they survive toxic mushrooms, piranhas, and tiny bats until finally they arrive home where Rooster is in for an even bigger surprise!
After ‘The Chicken Thief’ it is Rooster that takes centre stage in ‘The Treasure Thief’. As with the first book, the pen-and-ink drawings coloured with watercolour are exquisite. There is a strong pictorial narrative with terrific humour and vivid characterisation. There are the usual tiny details to spot on each two-page spread and images that confuse your sense of perspective. This is another riveting book that you can spend hours exploring every detail. Rodriguez is an excellent visual storytelling and this second book published by Gecko Press certainly doesn’t disappoint.
