Boy Who Drew Cats (The)
by Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: 6-8
Akiro is a young Japanese boy who loves to draw cats. Everywhere he goes and whatever he is asked to do he always draws cats, cats and more cats. His parents are exasperated and at a loss of what to do with him. They send him to the nearby temple to study under the priest there in the hope that this will stop him drawing cats but he is simply unable to stop. Eventually Akiro’s unusual talent leads him on an adventure that changes his life.
This well-known Japanese folktale has been expertly retold by Anushka Ravishankar. Set on an ochre background the delicate water colours and ink illustrations in the Japanese style by German illustrator Christine Kastl help to bring this unusual story to life.
