‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

Oscar the Ostrich
by Rachel Chaundler
Age Range: Under_5
Oscar the Ostrich lives in the African savannah with his parents. He has a fine feather tail and is extremely proud of it, strutting around all day with his feathers fanned out. At night, unlike the other Ostriches’ he doesn’t curl up and crush his feathers; he sleeps with his head in the sand and his tail in the air. Oscar’s mother thinks he’s very vain.
“ Oscar Ostrich you silly bird …
Sleeping like that is just absurd!”
Oscar, however, pays no attention to her and by the next morning he is really regretting that he didn’t listen to her advice as he stretches his neck and realises that his head doesn’t move!
Rachel Chaundler’s simple tale holds a message that vanity can get you into trouble. The repetitive text as Oscar seeks help from the other animals is ideal for very young children. Portuguese illustrator Bernardo Carvalho has created some engaging and amusing artwork with the feel of the desert and the expressive characters of the animals with his bold brush strokes.
