Bruno the Beekeeper
by Aneta Frantiska Holasova
Age Range: 9-11
When we read textbooks in school to learn, the tiny words can often get jumbled in our heads; the textbooks sometimes discourage us from learning because they can become uninteresting to students who thrive with more engagement. If anyone wants to learn about what it means to be a beekeeper and harvest honey, they should skip the textbook and go straight to Bruno the Beekeeper by Czech author Aneta Františka Holasová and translated by Andrew Lass.
Looking at the cover of the book, Holasová’s illustration of an old-timey, cosy-looking, unassuming golden bear with an apron and plaid long-sleeve welcomes readers to what will turn out to be a very informative lesson on bees and honey. The anthropomorphized Bruno the bear and Grandma, who “is kind, patient, and as hardworking as a bee,” take care of the bees and the honey-making process through each season, and their process is interwoven with definitions and diagrams perfect for upper-elementary-aged students. Perhaps next time Bruno can use his warm presence to teach readers other textbook lessons, like calculus or physics.
Bruno the Beekeeper is part of the Reading the World: Picture Books and Translation at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, 2022.
