Astrid Lindgren's Tomten Tales: The Tomten and The Tomten and the Fox
by Astrid Lindgren
Age Range: Under_5
The Tomten is an elf-like figure, a good natured soul who is adventurous and a free-spirit. He is very, very old and has seen many hundreds of winters.
In the first of the two stories The Tomten, the old Tomten silently tiptoes through the snow, keeping watch over the farm on a chilly winter night. He lives in a corner of the hayloft and comes out at night when the humans are asleep. No one has ever seen him but they know he’s there. Every night the Tomten checks on the cows, then the Shire horse, sheep and lambs, the hens and guard dog, and finally the adults and children in the farmhouse. Winters come and go but the Tomten will always look after the farm and its inhabitants.
In the second story, The Tomten and the Fox, a fox called Reynard is hungry and intent upon plundering the farm and finding a nice tasty hen. The old Tomten is shrewd, he knows what the fox is planning and is able to protect the hens, while also acknowledging that it’s the nature of the fox to be a predator so he finds a satisfactory solution.
Two classic stories by Sweden’s acclaimed children’s author have been created into this charming edition with the original soft, enchanting illustrations by Harald Wilberg allowing the world of the Tomten to be vividly brought to life.
