‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Barbro Lindgren
Age Range: Under_5
Max has his wagon. In to it, he puts his dog, his ball, his cookie, his teddy and many other toys. The question is, will everything fit in his wagon? Even more important, if everything falls out, will it all go back in again?
This is an excellent board book for babies and very small children. With one sentence a page and clear, colourful full-page illustrations, we slowly watch Max put item after item into his wagon. There’s lots of detail for small readers to pick out in the pictures and keep them interested in the story. The comic expressions on the dog’s face in particular strike a comic chord and parents if not little ones will know exactly where Max’s cookie has gone when it disappears!
The repetition in the sentences and items as they are listed and relisted will really help build vocabulary for small children too but in a very gentle way. This book is short, making it a treat for parents and children to read, being structured and amusing with cheerful illustrations by Eva Eriksson that perfectly compliment Barbro Lindgren’s simple, pleasant narration.
