Ernest & Celestine
by Gabrielle Vincent
Age Range: Under_5
Celestine takes her beloved toy penguin Simeon everywhere she goes, even out for a walk in the snow with Ernest. But on the way home Celestine realises that she has dropped Simeon in the snow. Ernest promises to go and look for him the very next day as Celestine is inconsolable.
This charming tale of friendship between a bear and a mouse was first written in the 1980s, and with a new translation in English by Sam Alexander it is available for a new audience to discover.
Belgian author and illustrator Gabrielle Vincent’s sublime and timeless watercolour and ink illustrations are so full of expression, particularly of Celestine. Their delicate, intricate detail captures the touches of humour perfectly which is what makes these two characters so endearing. Ernest and Celestine went on to become a classic series around the world as more books followed.
A French 2D animated film ‘Ernest & Celestine’ – based on the much loved series, tells the tale of how they met and became such good friends. The film won the Cesar for Best Animated Picture in 2013.
