Tale of the Tiny Man (The)
by Barbro Lindgren
Age Range: 6-8
“There once was a tiny man. One day, at the first sign of spring, he pinned a note to a tree that said FRIEND WANTED. ” Then he sat down on the steps to wait.
The tiny man waited and waited and then on the tenth day he woke to find a cold nose pressed firmly into his hand. Beside him was a big dog with a beautiful curve in its tail. The tiny man was overcome; at last, he had made a friend. Every day the dog visited him and they played, walked and laughed together. But one day, everything changed when a young girl in a yellow polka dot dress came and sat on the step next to the tiny man and the dog. He watched sadly as the dog put his soft muzzle into the girl’s hand and worried that he has lost his only friend.
This much-loved classic Swedish picture book written in 1979 by award-winning author Barbro Lindgren is a celebratory edition, translated by Julia Marshall and with new illustrations by Eva Eriksson.
“There once was a tiny man. He was very lonely. Even though he was kind, no one cared for him much. People thought he was too small and possibly a bit slow. They also thought his hat was ugly. ”
Lindgren’s powerful opening paragraph poignantly captures the loneliness of someone who doesn’t quite fit in and who longs for friendship. This beautiful story shows how important friendship is to someone who is lonely and the role animals can play in providing fun and companionship.
Eva Eriksson’s rich colour palette watercolour artwork, is as usual, exquisite and sings with expression, especially the warmth and fun of the relationship between the tiny man and the dog.
A timeless classic that is just as relevant today as it was when it was first written over 40 years ago.
