Girls
by Annet Schaap
Age Range: 9-11
Girls is a set of stories with a difference. Seven famous fairy stories by Perrault and the Brothers Grimm have had a complete makeover and been given a thoroughly modern twist. These are certainly no faithful adaptations and Dutch author Annet Schaap has used these classic stories, seamlessly translated by Laura Watkinson, as a base to create her own very original and inventive tales.
These stories are most certainly not the ‘happy-ever-after variety. The female protagonists are feisty, strong and true to life. They are definitely not damsels in distress and don’t need a prince to rescue them because they are perfectly capable of looking after themselves. The weak men in their lives can be dealt with, whether it’s a lazy king or a negligent father and they are certainly not afraid of an unscary Big Bad Wolf. The girls may, of course, daydream about a knight in shining armour who will sweep them off their feet, but that’s all it is, imagination.
Schaap’s woodcut-like black-and-white illustrations perfectly complement the stories.
These are clever, witty stories to be savoured.
Another title by Schaap on the Outside In World website is Lampie and the Children of the Sea published in 2019.
