Snow Queen (The) Retold by Anthea Bell
by Hans Christian Andersen
Age Range: 9-11
Kay and Gerda live next door to each other and are the best of friends. When two tiny splinters of glass from a cursed magic mirror enter Kay’s eye and heart, he can no longer perceive goodness in anything. This causes him to become mean spirited and unkind, particularly to Gerda, because his heart has turned into a lump of ice. One wintry evening, Kay is kidnapped by the beautiful, but wicked Snow Queen and swept away to live forever in her kingdom of ice.
Gerda sets out on a perilous journey, travelling through inhospitable lands to rescue him from the Snow Queen’s frozen palace. Along the way she is met with all kinds of challenges but she receives help from a raven, a bandit girl, reindeer and the Lapp and Finn Women. However, her most powerful weapon against the Snow Queen is her generous and loving heart.
Nearly two centuries after its first publication in 1844, The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen has been retold by award-winning translator Anthea Bell together with exquisite, ethereal illustrations by artist Yana Sedova.
