Masks and Performance with Everyday Materials
by Gita Wolf, V. Geetha and Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: 9-11
This is an accessible and practical guide to putting on a performance with masks. Drawing from ancient mask making traditions of India, it contains instructions on how to make a variety of masks and props, using easily available everyday materials.
Mask makers and performers from four different traditions in South India were invited to a set of workshops with a group of twelve-year-old children. They shared their skills and knowledge and inspired the children to make their own masks and come up with their own show.
Divided into two sections, this book first explores masked theatre, the many different types of masks, face painting and cut-out-masks while section two looks at performance, story to script and words and songs.
Masks and Performance with Everyday Materials is an excellent step-by-step guide to putting on a performance from the script, directing and producing a play. For those serious performers, the book gives an indication of the timeframe for putting on a masked performance – about a month (of 5 to 6 working hours each day which includes making the masks, writing the script and rehearsing the play. An ideal hands-on guide to performance education.
The other art activity books in the series are: Child Art with Everyday Materials , Puppets Unlimited with Everyday Materials and Toys and Tales with Everyday Materials.
