How Our Solar System Began: The Planets, Their Moons and Beyond
by Aina Bestard
Age Range: 9-11
How Our Solar System Began by Spanish author and illustrator Aina Bestard is another clever and exquisitely designed large-format picture book following on from How Life on Earth Began in 2022. Here the reader can take an incredible Journey into Space to learn about the universe and our solar system. From the origins of the universe to how the Sun was formed, what Saturn’s rings are made of and where comets come from. You can also explore the neighbouring planets and discover what the Kuiper Belt is – a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune as well as be right up to date with the latest scientific research and discoveries.
The graphic and iconographic principles of Bestard’s artwork take their inspiration from 19th-century astronomical illustration, whose interpretative skills strikingly combined reality and fantasy. The artwork is beautifully executed and the text, translated by Matthew Clarke, provides clear and concise language which is easy to understand. Combined with the fold-out pages and tracing paper inserts this is a visual feast as there is so much to look at and absorb.
Other titles by Bestard reviewed on the website include What's Hidden in the Woods? (2015) and Amazing Animal Babies (2018).
