‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Milo and the Mysterious Island
by Marcus Pfister
Age Range: 6-8
Part of the Milo series, this book is the sequel to Milo and the Magical Stones.
Milo the cliff mouse is bored and restless and he longs to go off exploring to
see what lies over the horizon. Milo tells the other mice about his dream and
of his idea of making a giant raft so that they can sail across the sea. This
reminds wise old Balthazar of the ancient tale about a mysterious island
inhabited by striped mice. They all join forces to build a raft and – with their
glittering magical stones to light their way – set sail in search of the island.
There is a clever alternative-ending format halfway through the story whereby
the book splits into two sections, allowing young children to participate in
the story and decide whether it will have a happy or sad ending. This is a
large format book with the use of simple shapes and soft outlines that are
characteristic of Marcus Pfister’s work.
