Finding the Way to Faraway Valley
by Cecilia Heikkila
Age Range: Under_5
On a visit to his Grandpa, the narrator little bear asks about a postcard of a beautiful landscape that has been stuck on his fridge for as long as he can remember. “Ah,” sighs Grandpa “that’s Faraway Valley” and he begins to tell the little bear all about a magical place far, far away. “Can I go” begs the little bear. Grandpa promises to take him but stresses that first there is a lot for him to learn before they set off. They practice pitching a tent, reading maps, studying all the different creatures living in the north and the safety on ships. Then one morning, Grandpa says they are ready to depart on their adventure. Their travels are full of uncertainty - does Faraway Valley still exist, and can they find it?
This charming heart-warming story by Swedish author and illustrator Cecilia Heikkilä, translated by Polly Lawson, captures the wonder and joy of Grandpa and the little bear’s adventure as they journey to Faraway Valley.
Heikkilä’s mixed-media artwork using watercolours, gouache, pastels and digital methods are expressive and atmospheric. This is a lovely, gentle celebration of the wonders of the natural world and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
