Pearl Whisperer (The)
by Karin Erlandsson
Age Range: 9-11
The Pearl Whisperer is the first book in a four-part series Song of the Eye Stone.
In the Queendom, Pearls are the most precious commodity. Narrator Miranda is a skilled pearl fisher and when a once-in-a-generation proclamation by the Queen is posted in the town square stating
“Whosoever finds the eye stone shall be paid seven-fold its worth in gold” it’s a challenge she cannot resist. Miranda has already lost her father and mother who left home never to return and has faced her own life-changing experience in the search for pearls when she lost an arm to the fearsome rose-shark when she was eleven. Despite this Miranda has set her sights on finding the eye stone because legend has it that whoever finds it will never want for anything ever again. However, she wasn’t anticipating having to take the young talkative Syrsa on her mission.
It soon becomes clear that Syrsa has a rare talent; she is one of the very few pearl whisperers, able to hear the pearls and summon them from the sea bed. After setting out on their journey they discover that they are not the only ones on the hunt for the eye stone. The sinister merchant Iberis is right behind them.
Finnish Swedish-speaking author and journalist Karin Erlandsson is one of the most successful and most acclaimed children’s authors in the Swedish language and she has woven a fantastical tale, skilfully translated by Annie Prime, mixed with realism about the natural world of the ocean. Her protagonist Miranda is tough and feisty and not always an easy character to like, but as her relationship with Syrsa evolves she develops a softer side as she begins to learn the value of friendship and what matters in life.
