Box (The)
by Isabella Paglia
Age Range: Under_5
One day Bear, Fox, Rabbit, Squirrel, and Owl discover a mysterious box on the forest floor. There are two holes in the side and when it begins to move it’s clear there is something inside. Anxious to welcome whoever it is to the forest the animals shout out greetings and words of encouragement to come out of the box, but all they hear in reply is “NOOOOOO!” The group of friends come up with all different reasons why the occupant of the box might be reluctant to emerge – Bear thinks they may feel “ugly or different or like they don’t belong”, while Squirrel wonders if they are having a rough day, one that makes them feel really sad, and Fox says that maybe something bad has happened to them and now they are scared.
The animals put on entertainment with music and hold a party as an enticement to come out of the box with no success. How can they reassure the inhabitant of the box and introduce them to a wonderful new home?
Italian author Isabelle Paglia’s gentle story, translated by Laura Watkinson, has a lovely message showing the importance of allowing others plenty of space to do things in their own time and to realise the value of companionship and friendship. The gorgeous coloured pencil illustrations by Italian artist Paolo Proietti are in a soft palette of earthy tones that beautifully evoke the forest setting.
