Herd Boy (The)
by Niki Daly
Age Range: 6-8
Malusi is a young herd boy who tends to his grandfather’s sheep and goats among the mountains of the Transkei in rural South Africa. At sun rise he gets up, eats the Mielie pap (maize porridge) that his mother has prepared for him and sets out for the grazing slopes. He watches over his flock all day making sure they don’t stray and sometimes he plays two-man football and stick fights with his friend Lungisa.
Lungisa says that when he grows up he wants to play football for Bafana-Bafana. “When I grow up” says Malusi “I’m going to be President”. Lungisa can’t stop laughing; he has never heard anything so funny. On their way home an old man in a big shiny black car stops and chats to the boys. When he hears of Malusi’s dream he tells him that ‘a boy who looks after his herd will make a very fine leader’.
This is an aspirational picture book by South African award-winning author and illustrator, Niki Daly. Malusi is only a poor humble herd boy but he dares to have a big dream. It is a story of self-belief inspired by the life of the former President, Nelson Mandela. There is an endnote about the link with Mandela together with a glossary of African words.
