Too Many Rabbits
by Davide Cali
Age Range: 6-8
After a month of pleading, Owen and Zoey finally persuade their Dad to take them to the pet store to get a rabbit. “This Week Only! 2 Rabbits for the price of 1,” says the sign in the window. Owen and Zoey’s Dad thinks this is a great deal so they come home with two rabbits – one male, and one female. Apart from gnawing at the furniture and leaving little chocolate eyes all over the place these delightfully cute creatures also create tons of baby rabbits!
So begins an unusual and hilarious counting book with a difference by Swiss-born Italian author Davide Cali, translated by Angus Yuen-Killick and with gorgeous pen and ink, and crayon illustrations by Emanuele Benetti. There is a lot to absorb in Benetti’s detailed artwork in differing shades of grey that burst to life with the ever-increasing bright orange rabbits bringing the humour of the story to the fore. Whether it’s the solitary rabbit posted through a neighbour’s letterbox, eight rabbits in a supermarket trolley of an unsuspecting customer or the fifteen rabbits left in the ladies’ underwear department of a big store the illustrations will make you smile.
Too Many Rabbits is a light-hearted and humorous tale and a reminder to be careful of what you wish for which young readers are sure to find lots of fun.
