Selma
by Jutta Bauer
Age Range: Under_5
Selma the Ewe is a wise and sensible animal who possesses the key to happiness. Every morning at sunrise Selma eats some grass, plays with her children, takes some exercise in the afternoon and then eats some more grass. She even has a chat with a neighbour in the evening before finally falling asleep. Selma is content with her life and when she is asked what she would do if she won a million pounds she replies that she doesn’t believe this would enhance the quality of her life.
Jutta Bauer has produced a simple concept in a straightforward way. In a few pages she is able to show us the secret of being happy and content with life through the whimsical cartoon-like pen and ink line drawings with their gentle wash of colour. Together with the repetition of Selma’s simple message showing that the small pleasures in life are sometimes the best. Children are sure to enjoy this small delightful book. Selma is a huge hit in Germany, selling more than 200,000 copies.
