diminished, we are starved’

Writer (The)
by Davide Cali
Age Range: 6-8
A French bulldog has a very important job to do. His owner is a writer and far too busy to do anything else. Without a dog by his side, he would forget to get dressed or eat and he’d probably be glued to his computer all day long. All the dog hears all day is “Tic, Ti Tic, Tic, Tic, Ti Tic Tic, Tic Tic” which is extremely irritating and with the best will in the world, he can’t do everything. What the writer needs is a human companion and it’s up to the dog to find him one!
Italian author Davide Cali’s warm and witty picture book, narrated by an exasperated dog, is captured beautifully in the humorous earth-tone palette of the fine pencil-lined artwork by Monica Barengo bringing this engaging picture book to life. The image of the dog is based on Barengo’s own dog Greta and the expressions are wonderful as they portray a range of emotions as the dog tries to deal with his infuriating owner.
The Writer was one of the winners of The New York Times New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children's Books Award in 2022.
