Tiger on a Tree
by Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: Under_5
This is a story about a wild tiger cub that wanders into a village looking for adventure on the shores of a river. Suddenly, he is scared by a goat and looks for refuge in a tree. He is discovered by a group of villagers who are frightened and decide to capture him. They surround the tree and with the help of a net Tiger is trapped. Now they have to decide what to do with him! Tiger on a Tree is an internationally award-winning book written in Indian/English nonsense verse.
The story has a charming simplicity with light verse spreading in waves through the pages. Full of rhythm and onomatopoeic words, this is a wonderful story to read aloud. Pulak Biswas’ simplistic hand silk-screened illustrations complement the narrative with the use of the two colours, (“tigerish” black and orange, across white hand-made paper) and bring alive the expressive characters from one of India’s best children’s book illustrators.
