Cleopatra must be Saved! Children of the Nile 1
by Alain Surget
Age Range: 6-8
Ten-year-old Imeni, his Greek friend Antinios and their pet Fox, Fent are quietly minding their own business as they do a bit of fishing in the Nil. Their reverie is rudely interrupted by a feisty young girl called Cleo who proceeds to turn their world upside down. Cleo works as a serving girl in an ale house in Memphis and accidentally overhears a group of men plotting to kill Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. Unfortunately for Cleo, she is spotted by a rough looking individual with bright red hair and she has to beat a hasty retreat as she is now in grave danger; her only hope is her new-found friends whose boat is moored a short way off shore. It is now up to the three friends to warn Queen Cleopatra of the danger she is in but this is no easy task when they live a long way from the capital city Alexandria and have the plotters hot on their heels.
French author Alain Surget is professor of history as well as a prolific novelist. He has written a hugely entertaining story set in Egypt at the time of Queen Cleopatra that children are sure to engage with. A thoroughly enjoyable read accompanied by humorous cartoon-like illustrations by French artist Fabrice Parme.
Cleopatra must be Saved! is the first in a series of 'Children of the Nile books that includes Book 2 – Caesar, Who's He? Book 2 – Prisoners in the Pyramids and Book 4 – Danger at the Circus!
