Jasmine Sneeze
by Nadine Kaadan
Age Range: 6-8
'Haroun is the happiest cat in the world'. He lives in the city of Damascus, 'the city of a million and one cats' and likes to sleep on the marble floor next to the fountain in his favourite courtyard, especially after he's had a late night bout of karaoke with the other cats. Life is good for Haroun; he's a popular cat who is always made a fuss of and he often gets given treats. But there is just one problem: the sweet scented Jasmine flowers make him sneeze. Haroun believes he has come up with the perfect solution, but doesn't anticipate the anger of the Jasmine spirit, who it is said, has lived in the jasmine trees of Damascus for thousands of years, and is certainly not amused by his antics.
The Jasmine Sneeze is award-winning Syrian author and illustrator Nadine Kaadan's first UK book with Lantana Publishing. She has woven an entertaining tale about the lovable Haroun based around the City of Jasmine (Damascus). Jasmine is the symbolic flower of Damascus and this enchanting story and delectable illustrations with their rich swirling colours and patterns on every page demonstrates Syria's long and proud cultural heritage at a time when it has been marred by five years of war.
A gorgeous book which we hope is the first of many in the UK from this talented author and illustrator.
