Bedtime for Bo
by Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold
Age Range: 6-8
When bedtime rolls around, it can be hard to say a quiet goodbye to an exciting day—this is something that the little boy Bo feels right before bedtime, as “he does tumblesaults on the sofa and sings as loud as he can.” Bo’s Mommy translates Bo’s silliness leftover from the day into bedtime adventures, complete with imaginary animals of all kinds that assist him in winding down. Illustrator Mari Kanstad Johnsen paints these animals such as a gorgeous parrot of warm hues sleeping while standing on one leg, a brown bear almost disappearing into the dark orange background as it hides in its cosy den, sea otters lovingly cuddling Bo when floating in the deep blue sea, and a giraffe that towers horizontally across the pages of the 25 cm by 34 cm book so that anyone reading would inevitably stretch their own neck like that giraffe to see the entire giraffe and the accompanying horizontal words.
Bedtime for Bo, originally written in Norwegian by Kjersti Annesdatter Skomsvold and then translated into English by Kari Dickson, captures the mundane-daily-activities-turned-magical essence that many children’s books showcase. As seen in his mischievous facial expressions, bedtime becomes fun with imaginary animals for Bo, the little blonde boy with Charlie-and-Lola-like features. Bo’s one open eye on the cover of the book indicates the pure exhilaration of making bedtime fun.
