Peter and the Winter Sleepers
by Rick de Haas
Age Range: Under_5
Peter lives in a lighthouse with his grandmother and his dog Leo. One terrible winter it just keeps snowing and snowing. Soon the snow is three foot deep outside their door. Peter hears a scratching sound at the door but when he looks out he can’t see anything. As he tries to open the door he finds a high wall of snow except for one small hole where the face of a very cold rabbit peers in. Peter immediately invites the rabbit in to get warm. This is the first of many visitors who are all seeking refuge from the bitter cold and snow including an owl, robin, bat, a pair of hedgehogs, a pair of mice and even a family of squirrels. The final visitor is a fox – what mayhem will he cause though?
Dutch author and illustration Rick de Haas has created a simple tale about helping those in need. With brightly coloured watercolour illustrations this is one of several books about Peter. See Peter and the Submarine.
