Soon they are exploring together and making a trip to the mysterious Kirrin island where the cousins make an exciting discovery. However, they are not the only ones searching for treasure.
This world-famous adventure story by Enid Blyton is retold for the first time from the graphic novel by French father-and-son team Nataël (author) and Béja (artist), 80 years after its original publication.
The graphic novel format is an ideal way to introduce Blyton to a whole new audience. The excellent translation from French by Emma Page keeps as near to the style and language of the original as possible while making subtle changes where necessary. Translated back into English from the French adaptation of Blyton’s story for the graphic novel edition, it allows a new audience of English-speaking readers to access Nataël and Béja’s wonderful creation. There are hints of French settings with a coffee pot on the table rather than a teapot and the French policeman’s uniform with a gun holster but this in no way detracts from Blyton’s story.
Béja’s detailed artwork perfectly demonstrates the carefree childhood, life outdoors, imaginative adventure and independence from parents that Blyton intended and although it is a retelling of an 80-year-old story it has a fresh and modern feel.
A superb addition to the graphic novel genre that will appeal to Blyton fans new and old.
There is a second title in the series Five Go Adventuring Again also published in 2022.
