Mister Fairy
by Morgane de Cadier
Age Range: 6-8
In the forest, there are all kinds of fairies who have their own special talents except for Mister Fairy, who cannot do anything remotely magical despite his best efforts. The Morning fairies can wake everyone up but Mister Fairy is not a morning person and is rarely up in time for breakfast. Neither is Mister Fairy “a Boo-boo fairy, who fixes and heals and makes it all better” and when he does wave his wand all the trees just turn to pink fluff!
Mister Fairy feels useless and doesn’t believe he is good at anything which makes him very sad. With a heavy heart, he decides to fly far away leaving the forest and all his friends. What Mister Fairy encounters on his journey is a very different world from the one he is used to - a large, grey and colourless metropolis where everyone seems unhappy just like him. Will Mister Fairy be able to find a way to conjure up his hidden magical powers to help them?
This quirky picture book written by French author Morgane de Cadier and adapted and translated by Angus Yuen- Killick contrasts humour with the more serious scenes of Mister Fairy’s encounters in the big, noisy city and with the miserable people who inhabit it. French illustrator Florian Pigé has provided charming and evocative artwork that reflects perfectly the story as it shifts in mood. The lushness of Mister Fairy’s home in the forest is bathed in a warm yellow and brown glow which contrasts starkly with the grey tones of the gloomy city.
A lovely, gentle tale with striking illustrations and an important message about finding a place in the world. Initially, Mister Fairy believes himself to be an outsider but then he discovers through helping others that he has his very own special skill.
