Shani Chickens
by Morfudd Bevan
Age Range: Under_5
Shani Chickens lives in her ramshackle cottage with its thatched roof and limewashed walls of mud and stone on the beach at Cei Bach with a cockerel and nine hens. She enjoys two visits a day from Mr Morgan, the sea and tries to eke out a living by selling eggs, which no one wants to buy because they taste of salt and the sea, and telling fortunes. Everyone loves Shani Chickens, who hated cruelty to children and animals and was fond of singing songs and telling stories.
Written by Welsh author Morfudd Bevan and translated by Peter Stevenson, Shani Chickens is based on the real-life story, of Jane Leonard, known as Shani Pob Man, who lived in Cei Bach, Ceredigion, in the late 19th century, details of which are at the back of the book.
Valériane Leblond’s evocative illustrations, with their rich colours done in egg tempera, and painted on tea-stained paper in celebration of Shani’s brown eggs, bring this delightful, quirky tale to life.
