One Night Far From Here
by Julia Wauters
Age Range: 6-8
One Night, Far From Here is an enchanting visit to the African desert, the rainforest, the jungle and even the deep blue ocean revealing the magic and mystery of what happens to the animals who live there during the night and the day.
In the pitch black of night a hush has descended in the African Savannah. In the darkness you can discover yellow-winged bats flying, a King papilio and a golden silk orb-weaver and its web, but turn the page and as day breaks the animals begin to stir. “At dawn’s first light the giraffes blend in with the tallest trees, a mother elephant guides her baby”. There are flamingoes fishing, grey woodpeckers pecking midges, a zebra, lioness and a genenuk all going about their business.
This delightful picture book by German author Julia Wauters is filled with transparent pages that are a revelation. A few specs of colour adorn the night-time images but as day appears the watercolour illustrations become rich in colour as they show the hub of activity.
What is so unusual about this book is that children can experience 24 hours of animal life in different settings around the world. It is a marvellous tool for teaching children about animals and the wonders of the natural world as they will love to interact with the combination of printed acetate and paper pages. At the back of the book there are two full double pages of animals which can be used to help children find the same animals within the pages of the book.
