‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

People
by Blexbolex
Age Range: 6-8
People is another inspirational book from the award-winning French comic artist Blexbolex. This time he has created an extraordinary world of people – real, historical, mythical and imaginary, who are all linked in surprising ways. Illustrated vignettes capture the human condition in all its diversity, richness and paradoxes and reveal a subtle, yet thought-provoking visual moral commentary on people.
There are families – a couple, a mother, a father, a baby; professional people – a teacher, biologist, astronomer and doctor. Some of the images contain more complex concepts – a bully, a prankster, a risk-taker, an illusionist, an eccentric, an invisible man and a day-dreamer. There are the images that tell a story - a body, an orphan, an invalid, a distracted man (who walks into a lamp post) or the observational illustrations that include a smoker, a nudist and a homeless person. The pairing of images over double-page spreads helps to create a narrative – a policeman and a thief, a soloist and a listener, a monk and a rabbi and a puppeteer and a puppet.
Blexbolex’s distinctive minimalist graphic style is apparent again following the same format as his book Seasons. Matte images in soft pastel colours, paired with a single word in large, pale blue text fill the pages.
People is a perfect learning tool for very young children as there is so much to discover throughout the pages. The expressive illustrations will excite older children and adults, particularly those interested in art and design. This is a sophisticated book that can be pored over as the images and concepts invite reflection and discussion.
