‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Princess Knight (The)
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: 6-8
Princess Violetta wants to be as strong and brave as
her three brothers are, despite her size. They are taught riding, jousting and
fighting with swords and the King decides that his daughter will be taught exactly
the same lessons. Constantly being teased and laughed at by her siblings as she
struggles to acquire the same skills, Violetta is determined that she will succeed.
At night she slips out into the woods and secretly teaches herself. As she
becomes nimble and quick even her brothers stop making fun of her and calling
her ‘Itsy-Bitsy Little Vi’. Soon she is ready for the greatest battle of all –
the tournament that will decide her future.
Cornelia Funke has produced a delightful picture book full of humour that children will enjoy. The engaging text is accompanied by Kerstin Meyer’s bright and bold cartoon-like illustrations that took their inspiration from the Bayeux Tapestry.
