Miss Cat: The Case of the Curious Canary
by Jean-Luc Fromental
Age Range: 6-8
This is the first, in a zany graphic novel series about Miss Cat, an intrepid detective who is always eager to get her claws into a new case. One day a new client turns up at Miss Cat’s detective agency at 29 Thirty Street to report a kidnapping. After business being a bit slow Miss Cat now has something to investigate and swings into action. Mr Maximus’ yellow canary has been taken and Miss Cat is drawn into a tale of dodgy crooks, strange secrets and some surprising animal magic!
French author Jean-Luc Fromental has created a delightfully absurd story, cleverly translated by Jill Phythian, which is a joy to read. The main characters from the despondent Mr Maximus, his suspicious-looking daughter-in-law Doris, her dog Wølfgang, Griselda, the Daily Dotti newspaper librarian and Olaf who runs Slurp’s, Miss Cat’s favourite milkshake bar, as well as some ‘animorphosis’ goings on provide for some hilarious situations.
French illustrator and printmaker Joëlle Jolivet’s artwork is rich in detail, full of colour and vibrancy and the eccentricities of Fromental’s characters are perfectly captured and infused with humour.
Miss Cat is a series that will be enjoyed by children and (adults) alike.
