Gawain Greytail and the Terrible Tab
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: Under_5
Raven Castle, owned by Sir Tristan of Twitstream, has become infested with mice. Sir Tristan, his wife and children are fed up with finding mouse droppings on the cheese, half nibbled toys and chewed-up chain mail. Despairing of finding a solution to their ever increasing 'mouse' problem, Sir Tristan decides he must invest in a deterrent. He spends ten gold coins to buy the best mouser in town – the terrible Tab, who is quickly installed in the castle. It is not long before Tab has wiped out most of the mouse population and only three mice – Snuffles, Shuffles and Scuffles remain, but help is on hand for them when the great mouse knight Gawain Greytail arrives at the castle to take on Tab.
Cornelia Funke's amusing story created for the Picture Squirrels series is a delightful satirical take on the medieval tales of chivalry – the knight mouse after all is called Gawain! With a mixture of adventure and humour, accompanied by sumptuous illustrations in bold, rich night-time palettes by Mónica Armiño, this is a story that is sure to have children giggling over the relentless tormenting of the scary cat by a brave and fearless knight mouse and the assortment of ingenious weapons used.
The Picture Squirrels series use text that runs top to bottom and left to right, in a dyslexia-friendly font and with a tinted background to reduce visual stress.
