Telephone Tales
by Gianni Rodari
Age Range: 9-11
Perhaps in your life, one of the most delightful traditions that you anticipate all day after waking up in the morning from your dreams would be the moment right before you fall asleep at night to dream again—because in that moment, a loved one may tell you a bedtime story. Now, imagine hearing those stories every night through short (but ever so sweet) telephone calls.
Telephone Tales is a collection of 70 of these bedtime stories transmitted through telephone calls by the travelling accountant Signor Bianchi to his daughter. Whether read straight-through or by flipping through to a random page to find a story, children and adult co-readers can share the joy of telling silly bedtime stories, as created by the travelling Italian accountant.
Now in the world of 2022, there is no doubt that Telephone Tales is a classic. Originally written by Gianni Rodari (1920-1980) in 1962 as Favole al telefono, Enchanted Lion published the English translation by Antony Shugaar in 2020. Ever since then, Telephone Tales has been acclaimed for being the winner of the 2020 Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ English Translation Prize, as well as the winner of the 2021 Mildred L. Batchelder Award.
The accolades are definitely deserved, as everything about the book is enjoyable, not only with the simple stories that tell tales of anything and everything (roads that go nowhere, roads made of chocolate, a comic strip mouse baffling real mice with its limited vocabulary, a man who steals the Colosseum, etc.) but also with the bright and vibrant illustrations by Valerio Vidali that pop out. Taking up entire pages that pop out colour and size-wise, they also literally pop out through gatefold illustrations and small pages inserted within the book pages. The manner in which the stories and illustrations are presented is something one would never suspect until opening the book.
