Bright in the Night
by Lena Sjoberg
Age Range: 9-11
“When Night falls, everything is dark. Or is It?”
Swedish author and illustrator Lena Sjöberg takes the reader on an amazing journey through the natural and human world to show that night is not always as dark as we first thought. Whether it’s in the shadowy forest, down in the depth of the oceans or through sleeping cities, there is plenty to show that the night is not pitch black.
Sometimes a pale light emanates from the moon or the sky is full of stars. In the oceans, there are glimmering marine creatures – crown jellyfish that flash like lights when they are threatened or shrimps that blow out a glowing cloud of slime to ward off predators and some coloured birds can have parts of their bodies that reflect ultraviolet light such as parrots and birds-of-paradise. There are also glowing mushrooms, creepy-crawlies like glow-worms and our empty towns and cities are lit with windows, street lights or even car headlamps.
There is a lot of information here to absorb and together with the brightly coloured animals and the natural world, this is an interesting non-fiction picture. The challenge to readers might be that much of the narrative is in a tiny font which makes it difficult to read easily but apart from this Bright in the Night provides an illuminating look at what really is out there in the darkness of night. The afterword on Bioluminescence and Biofluorescence helps to explain the science behind some of the mysteries.
