‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Under the Spell of the Moon
by Patricia Aldana (editor)
Age Range: 12+
This beautifully produced book shows the amazing talent of many children’s book illustrators throughout the world. The artists were commissioned to illustrate a text of their choice. They have selected nursery rhymes, songs, poems or prose from their own childhood which have then been illustrated in their own style. The text has been written in their own language, which has been translated into English by Stan Dragland. In most cases, there is a dual-language text.
This coffee-table book is a showcase of the work of award-winning artists many of whom were past winners of the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award. At the end of the book, there is biographical information about the artists who have contributed to this volume: Janal Amambing (Malaysia), Muhammed Amous (Palestine), Mitsumasa Anno (Japan), Rotraut Susanne Berner (Germany), Pulak Biswas (India), Ora Eitan (Israel), Noemí Villamuza (Spain) and many others
share their vision with other illustrators who are more familiar to the British audience such as Quentin Blake, Anthony Browne, Rosemary Wells and Lisbeth Zwerger just to mention a few.
An amazing book that proves the fact that illustration in children’s books is an art that is rapidly progressing throughout the world and acquiring the high status and respect that it deserves. IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) will receive 15% of every book sold.
