Those Messy Hempels
by Brigitte Luciani
Age Range: 6-8
The Hempels are a messy family. Nothing is ever in the right place, there is clutter
everywhere and they live in permanent chaos. But they don’t normally mind until
they decide to bake a cake and can’t find the whisk! This makes them realise that
it’s time to clean up and get things organised. As they tidy up and hunt for the
whisk it leads them on a hilarious cleaning spree as they find other objects that
belong in different parts of the house, but in the end they succeed in finding the
missing utensil.
Those Messy Hempels is a zany story that children will love. It is ideal for reading aloud as it has lots of repetition and interaction. For instance such questions are asked as; ‘where does the pillow belong, in the kitchen?’ or ‘where does the toothbrush belong, in the bedroom?’ A perfect book for parents and carers to use when trying to get children to tidy up! The impressive artwork is highly amusing and the geometrical, cardboard-like shape of the characters has a certain theatrical appeal that makes it child-friendly and very enjoyable.
