A Coin
by Ania Khromova
Age Range: Under_5
One morning Romko’s mum gives him a coin. It was shiny, yellow and round, “It looks like a dried apricot!” Romko says and asks if he can take it to the nursery to show his friends. Putting the coin in his pocket for safekeeping Romko has a busy day ahead making colourful butterflies, playing and going for a walk. When his dad comes to pick him up Romko is upset to find he’s lost the precious coin through a hole in his pocket. But his dad soon reassures him and through the power of imagination, Romko discovers something much more valuable.
Ukrainian poet, author and translator Ania Khromova has created a charming story, translated by Oksana Lushchevska, about what happens when we lose something special and how treasures can be found in everyday life if only you look for them. Romko’s dad uses humour and imagination to distract him from being sad at the loss of his coin. The vibrant artwork by award-winning Ukrainian illustrator Anna Sarvira and co-founder of the Pictoric Illustrators’ Club, is full of life and humour which perfectly mirror the text.
A Coin is one of a series of bilingual books from the new publisher Pineapple Lane. Each title is written, translated and illustrated by authors and artists whose lives have been disrupted by conflict. All the books are free to refugee families and the communities they are living with and are distributed through schools, libraries and grassroots organisations.
