One Thousand and One Nights
by Retold by C. J Moore
Age Range: 9-11
After being betrayed by his wife King Shahryar decides that he will take a new wife every day. When dawn comes his wife will be executed and a new bride chosen. Sheherazade is the daughter of the Chief Minister and she begs her father to let her become the king’s wife. She is beautiful as she is wise and she manages to stay alive each night by telling the king the most wonderful stories which she always leaves unfinished. And so for one thousand and one nights, she remains alive.
Part of the Arabian Nights tales One Thousand and One Nights includes the well-known stories “Sheherazade”; “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”; “The Ox and the Ass”; and “The Horse of Ebony”; as well as how the story of Sheherazade ended. In this beautiful new edition C. J. Moore’s retellings are brought to life by the enchanting, elegant subtly-coloured illustrations of Russian artist Olga Dugina which have the feel of Persian miniatures.
