My Wish Tonight
by Iris Wolfermann
Age Range: Under_5
What do children wish for? For many years, a popular European children’s radio programme invited children to send in their wishes, one of which was read out at the end of each programme. This picture book, illustrated by German illustrator Iris Wolfermann contains 20 of those that were read out on the radio programme.
The wishes range from flights of imagination – “that I could sit on a cloud and look at the stars” to concerns about the world, “that everybody in the world had a home” or “that people would take more care of the environment”. Some are funny – “I wish I could go faster than the speed of sound. Then I’d get to school in less than a minute”, “that I could fly to Mars and look for alien bones”, or “that everything was made of chocolate” and some are poetic “I wish that the moon doesn’t lose me when I sleep”.
Simple text and brightly coloured childlike drawings complement the innocence of these children’s wishes. At times poignant and sometimes amusing these wishes are always charming because they express feelings held by children everywhere.
