Whose Eyes Are These?
by Virginie Gobert-Martin
Age Range: Under_5
Whose Eyes are These? takes the reader on a journey of discovery to find the hidden animals amongst the pages. There are nine different animals, from Lenny the artful lemur who hides behind a mask; Jessica the gentle jellyfish, who likes people despite what they say; Harry the boastful hedgehog who is tough on slugs; Humphrey the clumsy hummingbird; Stefan the bossy stag; Frederick the chatty fox who can’t stop talking; Oswald the wise owl; Priscilla the enchanting praying mantis, is an expert kung-Fu fighter and Sophia the dazzling shrimp who struts her stuff in high heels and a pink dress.
Virginie Gobert-Martin’s poetic flowing text, translated from French by Rae Walter, is witty as well as being informative, but it is the magical illustrations by Madeline Peirsman that are truly captivating. The illustrations and text follow a pattern of sets of double-page spreads beginning with two massive eyes popping out of the pages, followed by the identity of the animal being revealed to a final dazzling double-page of each of the hidden animals. Can you spot them?
A clever and beautifully executed book to be enjoyed again and again.
