Aaahhh!
by Guilherme Karsten
Age Range: Under_5
Whatever is that noise? Aaahhh! The highest mountain in the world has collapsed; where once there were two poles – north and south – now there is a middle pole. A loud and terrible noise is permeating the whole planet. It is so loud that nobody can hear themselves think and it’s causing chaos and confusion. Is it a strange noise from outer space? Is someone playing a saxophone out of tune? Has a meteor crashed into a trombone factory? Just what is making that terrible racket? Everyone is in for a big surprise when the source of the noise is discovered!
This witty picture book is great fun. Brazilian illustrator and graphic designer Guilherme Karsten has used a mixed media of paint, crayon and collage packed full of detail creating a hilariously ‘loud’ story.
This is the US edition published by Tapioca Stories published in 2022.
No matter what age you are, you would probably agree that interactive storytelling is engaging, fun, and keeps you on your toes. When reading the book AAaaHHH! (written and illustrated by Brazilian author Guilherme Karsten and translated into English by Eric M. B. Becker), the reader gets to play along in an interactive way.
The question: what/who is making the gigantic, thunderous noise causing chaos throughout the entire world? What is causing the “AAaaHHH!” sound, and where is it coming from? The book has the reader guessing, asking if the sound is coming from another world, out-of-tune instruments, or even “a meteor crashing into a foghorn factory.” What could possibly be this loud?
To represent the cacophonous mood throughout the book, Karsten brilliantly illustrates the story with a collage-like look—with different, non-conforming styles of visuals—and the word “ AAaaHHH!” on each page. This is even more reason to want a resolution at the end of the story. Luckily, the readers will finally find out the source of the loud sound…which is something unexpected.
