Linnea in Monet's Garden
by Christina Bjork
Age Range: 9-11
Linnea is a young girl who loves flowers and goes to visit the flat of her neighbour,
old Mr Bloom. Mr Bloom used to be a gardener and in his library he has a book
about Monet with pictures of his garden of water lilies and his paintings. Linnea is
so taken by the book that she wants to find out more about the artist and his
work. Mr Bloom then suggests a trip to Paris, France to visit Monet’s place of
birth and the museums where his paintings are exhibited. Using two fictional characters, an adult and a child, the author is able to tell children about Monet’s life
and also explain his work in a way that they can relate to and understand.
Besides the colour illustrations of our two fictional characters there are black and
white and colour illustrations throughout of Monet and his paintings.
At the end of the book there is a list of museums in Paris with suggestions of things to do in the city as well as a timeline of Monet’s life. Even though Linnea in Monet’s Garden was published in the 1980s it is still a best-selling book which maintains its
original appeal. This is a friendly and innovative way of introducing well-known artists and art to children.
