Sato the Rabbit: The Moon
by Yuki Ainoya
Age Range: 6-8
In a matter-of-fact tone, the narrator of Sato the Rabbit: The Moon informs readers that “Haneru Sato the Rabbit goes into the woods and pulls the moon out from a thicket.” From then on, Sato the Rabbit sails in his moon boat and begins his new adventures in the second book of the Sato the Rabbit trilogy, written by Japanese author Yuki Ainoya and translated by Michael Blaskowsky. The moon reappears throughout the story as something “crisp” and “cool” that Sato can snack on, and he pulls its reflection out of the water and hangs it up to dry so he can sleep under it as a moon blanket.
Specifically, in this second story in the trilogy, all of Sato’s adventures are focused on nature. Whether he finds a sprout or a flower in the field, a body of water, or a pile of leaves, Sato will use his imagination to turn these images into something fantastical. There is no doubt that anyone reading this story will not put on their Sato glasses the next time they are out in the countryside to begin to see the world magically.
