Wind: Discovering Air in Motion
by Olga Fadeeva
Age Range: 9-11
Explore this attractively illustrated non-fiction picture book about the Wind. Packed with facts this fascinating book by Russian author and illustrator Olga Fadeeva, translated by Lena Traer, answers the many questions the text poses – where does the wind come from? what is wind? what are the different types of wind? how do we describe wind speed? or what happens in a hurricane? It also covers how the wind helps to shape the ecosystems, how humans have used the wind in the past and how they use it now.
This is Fadeeva’s first non-fiction book and she has done an excellent job of blending a chatty narrative with scientific fact. In an interview with the publisher, Fadeeva said she wanted her book to be different from the usual encyclopaedia and instead explore the subject through illustration. Fadeeva works mainly in watercolour and acrylic and the artwork is colourful and descriptive helping to explain the science in an easy-to-understand way. For example, the wind speed scale is shown over two double-page spreads where the reader can watch as the weather changes and a hurricane begins.
Created with help from a meteorologist, this engaging book is an ideal way to explore the wind’s role in world history and earth science.
