A Perfect Wonderful Day With Friends
by Philip Waechter
Age Range: Under_5
Raccoon is bored. He tries reading and some exercise but nothing helps. Then he decides to bake an apple cake, but he’s run out of eggs, so he visits his friend Fox who keeps chickens and always has plenty. Fox is hard at work trying to mend his roof but he doesn’t have a ladder. Badger will have one, says Raccoon. It turns out that Badger needs help too, so they all set off to find Bear. It’s a beautiful day and as the friends stroll through the meadows, they meet up with Crow, pick blackberries and find Bear fishing by the river. Soon the five friends are having the most wonderful day.
German author and illustrator Phillip Waechter’s exquisite pen and ink and watercolour artwork capture a carefree summer’s day with a group of friends. This is a beautiful picture book with its gentle humorous story and dialogue, translated by Melody Shaw, that builds up from each friend needing help from the other to all of them enjoying a spontaneous and delightful day out in each other’s company.
Other titles by Waechter reviewed on the website are Jacob’s Fantastic Flight (Blue Dot Kids Press, 2020) and Bravo (Gecko, 2011).
