‘This is a love story that isn’t strange at all’. A fat, grey elephant with purple spots lives in the jungle. Every day he sits at the side of the ant path to watch the ants go by. When he spies a black ant with a wasp’s waist he decides that he has fallen in love. He puts on his best checked suit that is too small for him, and waits for the ant to tell her how much he loves her. She eventually comes by carrying a leaf that says: FOLLOW ME! And that is exactly what the elephant does – through the door of the ant hill and on a fantastical journey following a winding path, down into a sewing basket, swimming into a bottle of water and finally ends up inside a sea shell, all, while following the love of his life!
This is a strange, surreal picture book with exquisite illustrations by Roger Olmos that truly bring the characters to life. It is certainly a love story with a difference, showing that opposites attract – the large, fat elephant and the small, dainty ant. Both the text and illustrations convey the quirky humour and children will enjoy the silliness of the daft, lovesick elephant as he journeys through bizarre places to reach his one true love.
