‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Chocolate the Hippopotamus was having her daily bath in the lagoon and Theodore the monkey was listening to the day’s news on the wind. Theodore tells Chocolate that he has just heard that there are some great public baths in the city. Chocolate decides she is going to try them out, so the next day, taking her small suitcase she says goodbye to all her friends and crosses the jungle on her way to town. It’s an adventurous day in town for Chocolate as she buys new clothes, eats out in a restaurant and finally tries out the public baths, which turn out to be somewhat smaller than she had anticipated and not quite so comfortable as her daily bath in the lagoon.
This is a charming, witty picture book by Spanish author Marisa Nunez. A gentle lesson in learning to value what is important in life. Chocolate’s day out teaches her to appreciate her surroundings, the beautiful lagoon where she can bathe in comfort. What make it so special are the sumptuous illustrations showing Chocolate’s experiences in town. Some of the incidents are truly comical and German illustrator Helga Bansch has done a wonderful job in putting across the humour of the text together with a strong African influence in the artwork. This is bound to become a firm favourite for a bedtime story.
