Tiny King (The)
by Taro Miura
Age Range: Under_5
The Tiny King is no bigger than a fingertip and he lives all alone in a huge castle. Although he is surrounded by luxury the Tiny King is sad and lonely because he has no one to share it with. But then one day, something wonderful happens – he meets the Big Princess which changes his life for ever.
The Tiny King by Japanese author and illustrator Taro Miura is a little bit different. It is the illustrations that enhance the text by the use of colour and perspective: the tiny king is placed against a stark black background, his vulnerability and smallness emphasised especially against his vast army of soldiers. The dining table, bath and bed loom larger than life across the pages in contrast to the minuteness of the king. The differing proportions adds humour and pathos, while the background colour of the pages conveys the king’s mood. As the Tiny King’s mood lightens, so too does the background colour from black to white, pink, yellow, orange, green and blue.
This is a charming, heart-warming story about the importance of family.
